Have a Little Faith in Church Conversion Projects

What was once Temple Baptist Church, a historic building in the heart of Toronto, is now being transformed into a four-storey, 32-unit boutique apartment building.

To preserve the front façade and succeed in meeting the tight timeline, real estate developer Oben Build took advantage of the many benefits of iSPAN’s cold-formed steel. Crews hung 12” TotalJoist sections off the structural steel frame using a Z-shape hanger, while the balconies were framed using our proprietary 8” TotalJoist. By running plumbing and electrical through access holes in the joists, we could achieve a ceiling height of 10 feet, as the builder required.

Project Highlights

Faster Completion

With the installation assistance of Cambridge Drywall Services, we were able to increase the workforce on site and implement safe and efficient installation techniques to complete the framing ahead of schedule.

Space at a Premium

This jobsite was very tight, and in a busy downtown Toronto location. iSPAN split delivery loads to be as efficient with the space as possible – accessories were delivered and installed the day before TotalJoist segments were delivered so that as they came off the truck they could be installed.

What Once Was Old is New

Our TotalJoist system helped to turn a 95-year old church into a new development while maintaining the unique curb appeal so beloved in the neighbourhood.
